New Music: The Kills Concert Film
& The Weakerthans’ John K. Samson ‘Provincial’ Solo Album

The Kills’ Live Concert Film

Alison Mosshart and James Hince have the kind of presence that makes you believe that these people were truly born to be on stage and rock as hard as they do. Which is why it’s awesome that The Kills have announced that they will be releasing a live concert DVD.

“A bunch of friends and fans filmed our second show at L’Olympia in Paris for us.” The performance took place just a couple weeks ago, on November 13, and included backing from the band’s own Black Rooster Drum Corps and Choir. [Exclaim.ca]

The Weakerthans’ John K. Samson ‘Provincial’ Solo Album

The landscape of this country is a familiar theme in Canadian music and John K. Samson, the frontman of the Weakerthans, is following true in that tradition with his new solo album.

John K. Samson has released seven-inch records about roads in his home province of Manitoba. These low-key three-song releases have now spawned a full-length, Provincial, due out January 24 via Epitaph Records.

According to a press release, the collection includes newly recorded versions of the songs from the seven-inches, plus unheard tracks.  [Exclaim.ca]

New Music: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Full Soundtrack

There’s been SO much talk about the new Hollywood version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and perhaps just as much chatter about the hugely-hyped soundtrack.

Composed by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the full track listing has now been released.

“A sprawling three-hour opus” with 37 tracks including a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song featuring the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, Reznor calls the collection (which took 14 months to create) “some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers.”

The full release will be available for download December 9th. You can find out more from this post by Trent Reznor on the NIN website. You can also download a six-track, 35 minute sampler just by entering your email address here.

New Music: Asleep In The Pews – Evening Hymns

Last week, I was in the mood for something upbeat that I could turn up loud. This week couldn’t be more different – but it’s just as good!

Quiet and soft, a pulling-at-the-heartstrings kind of song, “Asleep In the Pews” is a new release from Evening Hymns from their upcoming album Spectral Dusk (Shuffling Feet Records) which will be out in spring 2012.

Recorded in “the depths of a Canadian winter,” the album features members of The Wooden Sky, Ohbijou, and City and Colour. Evening Hymns are currently touring Europe, playing with Agnes Obel and Timber Timbre, but you can check out “Asleep In the Pews” below.

New Music: Niki and the Dove

“Mystery hangs around this band, both on record and, especially, in person: whether it’s the conspiratorial whispering with each other in Swedish, the conversations punctuated by Malin’s childlike yelps of laughter, or Gustaf’s tangential flights of fancy, it’s like stepping into another world.”

I was definitely in the mood for something upbeat as I scanned the music that popped into my inbox this week. Hence Niki and the Dove. Gustaf Karlöf and Malin Dahlström are a Swedish pop duo who have just released their new EP, ‘The Drummer’ on Mercury Records.

“They make the kind of pop music only Scandinavians seem capable of: all strident and immediate on the one hand but also curiously knotty and multi-layered, with each song marrying lyrical complexity with clattering percussion and joyful dollops of synth.” [The Guardian]

If you check out their music on Soundcloud, I’d suggest starting with Mother Protect and Winterheart. Seriously, don’t they both belong on a soundtrack? Yes. Yes, they do.

I wasn’t sure about a couple of their songs, but have to admit, I fell in love with DJ Ease My Mind when I saw the video (below Mother Protect) — I now want to fling around on ropes all day to funky music!).
